Day 8 of 16
We started this day with the Southern California R2K
Caravan. They were so good to us, first they gave us a goodie bag with
alien/bug stuff the night before when we arrived and then we won about 4 door
prizes, finally we won the award for the "Best Bud Vase" and "Dirtiest Car".
We definitely deserved the dirtiest car, but I think the Gods must have been
smiling down on us to win the Bud Vase. Our trip for the day was about 350
miles including one stop at the Pistachio Farm and one creative detour towards
Mexico :) It was a really pretty drive with some beautiful mountain scenery
and good roads with no rain, temperatures in the upper 80s most of the time.
We also had Brenda from Alaska in the Southern California caravan of 12 cars.
She has driven about 4500 miles so far to get to Roswell about a 1000 miles
further than our trip. Brenda also gave Heather a Eskimo doll which was really
nice of her.
Once we arrived in Roswell, we picked up our pre-registered
package at the Sally Port and then went to laundry and wash the car. While the
car was being washed Heather and I went shopping at Big Lots and Target
looking for Glow Stuff for tonight. They had a cool NB toy at Big Lots, but it
was way to big to fit in our car, we have no more room. We got the laundry
done and car cleaned and headed back to the hotel. With the High Speed
connection, I was able to get all my pictures uploaded, so now all the days
are completely clickable :)
We headed to the Sky Watch party. Seeing all the bugs
together for the first time was fun. We had some little hotdogs, meat balls,
chips & dip, fried peppers, fried vegetables and other stuff. We then went
outside to setup the car for the Glow Parade. VW did an little show including
some fireworks, helicopter and the introduction of a special edition Blue New
Beetle which included Blue/Black cloth interior & Satellite radio. The Blue is
lighter than Naomi's car, nice color but I am sure Naomi would have preferred
Pink or Purple :) Dean Jones, who starred in the Herbie movies was in the car.
He was very nice and posed for a few pictures.
Then we headed into town for the Glow Parade. Some of the
lighting was really cool, but is was a shame the parade didn't go through
downtown. After the parade we went to Wienerschnitzel for drinks and a new
antenna topper. A really fun first day in Roswell. We ran into allot of old
friends and some not so friendly, but Howie behaved himself anyway :)
